This exciting class will guide students through the elements of art -
line, shape, form, color and texture - to an awareness of God as
the Ultimate Artist. We will explore these elements as well as
God's creativity through unique drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture
and multicultural craft projects. Oral review, thinking skills and
sensory perception activities will be mixed in with our time together to
create a complete (and very fun!) art education. Each
project will highlight a specific art concept and will
coordinate with the National Visual Arts Standards. We will also
touch on several famous artists and art movements. I will be supplying
all the materials needed so your child can just come to class with empty
hands and leave with a project that includes universal art elements,
individual expression and the understanding that God is creative and
so am I! Student's artwork will be displayed in the
Spring Koinonia Art Show.

Don’t just sing in this class! Kids will love the different ways to learn about performing in
a chorus for the Fine Arts Evening each semester. We’ll include activities that teach mood, expression, and
emotion in song, and include light choreography. Students will learn to identify their particular voice,
practice good vocal habits, and then use it in songs about God…all in
different musical styles. Rap
included! Melody, unison, and
harmony will be taught with fun instruments. Academically, understanding the rhythm patterns, vocabulary,
and dynamics of a choral piece will be taught with sheet music. To put it all together, students will
actually compose their own music and together as a class.

This will be an exciting, hands-on computer class. Students
will build their understanding in how the computer works, in moving and
copying files, and in using drawing and writing tools, as well as simple
graphics. Much attention will be given to improving keyboarding skills
using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. Very little homework will be given each
week; there will be some handouts. A computer at home is very helpful, but
not required; however, daily access to a computer and a keyboarding program
will aid the student in reinforcing topics learned in class.

“The heart is to be taught as wise as
the mind.” Stories are a great way to do that. Stories teach us so much.
They enliven, enrich, feed our imagination, and teach us about life in
other places, times of long ago, and relationships people have with each
other. They inspire, entertain and make us laugh. They do so much. Telling
stories is even more fun. Through the use of puppets, props, and set design
children will learn to tell stories. Working together as a team and
individually students will be encouraged to use expression, and their
imagination to retell a story. Stories from the Bible, classics, new and
old will be used. Students will be making different kinds of puppets,
costumes and set designs.

This class will provide opportunities to develop problem-solving
skills and to build a greater understanding of the
mathematics you are teaching your child at home in a fun, hands-on
way! We will play a wide variety of whole group and small group games
as well as individual activities. Students will learn strategies for
solving math problems which will help them gain confidence in their
mathematical abilities. They will also begin to develop an ability to
visualize spatial relationships (geometry), to approximate (estimation), to
interpret data (probability and statistics), and to reason mathematically
(logical thinking) which will be essential tools as they progress
through mathematics.

Who says math can’t be
fun? We will have tons of fun playing
games that will bridge the gap between computation and mathematical
reasoning. We will learn how to
devise strategies to solve a wide variety of math problems. This class emphasizes problem solving
and computation to build the math reasoning skills necessary for success in
higher level math and math assessments.
This will be great preparation for the thinking skills necessary for
abstract high school level math.

and it's history! Our journey begins in the 1600's with what life was like
for the people of Michigan,
including the Indians, settlers, civil war, mining, lumbering, rural life,
manufacturing, resources and more. Students will learn what it was like to
live in the wilderness, taste their food and travel through history with
them. Using a variety of hands-on activities and materials together, we
will make history come alive, again.

They’ll sing loud, soft, fast, and slow - - all to different styles
and all about God. Songs used will
be from the Made For Praise music curriculum. Students will use different props such as percussion
instruments, streamers, balloons, and boom whackers as a fun way to
understand basic music theory. The
Kodaly method will be used to learn and see notation on a piece of
music. All students will be taught
the importance of good vocal performance which will be displayed in the

This fun, hands-on class will cover 3 different
subjects. Astronomy, Birds and Magnetism.
ASTRONOMY – students will pace off a scale model of the solar
system; experience how gravity
would feel on other planets; see the craters of the moon through your
binoculars; learn to recognize shooting stars, satellites, planets and
comets; explore the night sky with easy-to-use start maps; and use
artificial gravity to turn a cup of water upside down without spilling.
BIRDS students will - make your very own wild bird
feeder, learn the secrets of flight, grab your field guide and go on a bird
safari, write a letter with a quill pen that you make, feel the lift on an
actual flight feather, share bird watching with your family.
MAGNETISM
students will – feel forcer with strong magnets, use the power of
magnetism to defy gravity, see a magnet’s invisible force fields with
encased iron fillings, pace off a treasure map with your magnetic compass,
create works of genius with their own magnetic sculpture and make a
hand-held magnetic motor.

Sign language is definitely a beneficial language to learn,
whether you are working with elderly people (who cannot hear very well
anymore) or signing songs for your church’s Sunday School classes. The deaf
culture is fascinating to learn about, as is how their family’s lives are
different from ours. We will be covering many different signs, learning the
alphabet for finger spelling, signing with grammatical accuracy, studying
deaf people’s culture, and more. The only work that needs to be done at
home will be practicing the signs. You will be greatly rewarded for
learning sign language when your talent helps someone else to “hear”.
Students will perform in the January Show Case and Spring Fine Arts
program.

The main focus of this class is for students to have fun
playing games that will increase their vocabulary and strengthen their
ability to spell. As students learn
new words they will create lists of strong verbs, quality adjectives and
strong adverbs, and learn how to use their lists to create interesting
sentences. This class will have no homework or preparation by the
students. Come join us as we learn
new and impressive “words” and how they are used in good writing!

The goal of this class will be to
help students enjoy writing. Students will learn the five components of a
sentence and how to create sentences by choosing words that paint a picture
in the reader’s mind. Throughout the year students will gradually move up
to forming interesting paragraphs
and stories. Students will also learn how to
create outlines from passages plus use their outlines to present oral
reports. Vocabulary,
spelling, and grammar
will be taught in the context of writing assignments. In order for students to improve their
writing skills, they will be given one to two hours of writing homework
each week.

The teaching and information that will be used in this
class is taken from the International Society for Technology in
Education. These National Education
Technology Standards for Students help students achieve technology literacy
and are used by the Michigan Dept. of Education. Technology literacy is the ability to responsibly use
appropriate technology to communicate, solve problems, access, manage,
integrate, evaluate and create information. In this class we will review good keyboarding skills and
basic computer skills and then soon move to more challenging topics.
Students will build their understanding in how the computer works, in
moving and copying files, and in using drawing and writing tools, as well
as learning the foundation skills of using Microsoft Word, Excel and
PowerPoint. Very little homework will be given each week; however there
will be occasional out-of-class assignments, study for tests and projects.
Regular access to a computer will be very important for the successful
student to reinforce topics learned in class. Our class will be using Microsoft
Windows XP or higher and Microsoft Office 2003. Your version at home may
differ and is acceptable.
